Graphics can be very helpful in understanding complex ideas. The following graphic shows four components- mind, body, emotion and language (blue circles) – that allow leaders to connect emotionally with other people to change the future. I call this Affective Leadership. (Read the more detailed narrative description.)
Each of the four components includes skills that make connections possible. For example, the component of emotion includes understanding self, managing self, understanding others, empathy and managing the emotional climate of a group or organization. Leaders can learn and enhance their skills in each area.
These skills are tied to other skills such as listening, trust building, mentoring and coaching that leaders promote in their daily interactions with others (outer ring).
