Do You Practice Emotional Hygiene?

Do You Practice Emotional Hygiene?

Years go, I worked with a beloved high school English teacher who frequently repeated the misquoted Shakespeare line, "Heavy is the head that wears the crown." He was usually making light of unusual situations at the school or difficult decisions people in the the front office had to make. When I became the principal of the school, he enjoyed reminding me of that line.

I thought of my friend Ronnie and his comments as I watched the insightful Ted Talk below by Dr. Guy Winch, a psychologist, who argues that we should begin focusing on emotional hygiene just as we began focusing on physical hygiene in centuries past.

Winch was speaking to a general audience, but as he discussed why we must learn how to deal with rejection, loneliness and failure, I thought about how leaders must often deal with and overcome these very real and debilitating emotions.

I hope you will take a few minutes to watch the video, and if you have not taken a look at the resources and information in our Emotional Intelligence Portal, please do so today. Many of them are available for distribution and use with your own audiences through Creative Commons licensing.
